This includes single-plastics.
Too much plastic ends up in the environment where it can pollute our waterways and oceans and endanger marine life.
Much of the plastic we produce is designed to be thrown away after being used only once. As a result, plastic packaging accounts for about half of the plastic waste in the world. When discarded in landfills or in the environment, plastic can take up to a thousand years to decompose.
The BIA has adopted the principle of phasing out single-use plastics that are only used once before they are thrown away such as plastic shopping bags, food packaging and straws.
We have introduced a industry pledge to phase out single-use plastics by 2025. This is a voluntary program for the boating industry which supports the estimated 5 million people who go boating each year in Australia.
Now it’s your turn…
REFUSE disposable, single-use plastic whenever and wherever possible. Choose items that are not packaged in single-use plastic, and carry your own bags, containers and utensils. Say ‘no straw, please’.
REUSE durable, non-toxic straws, utensils, to-go containers, bottles, bags, and other everyday items. Choose glass, paper, stainless steel, wood, ceramic and bamboo over plastic.
REDUCE your single-use plastic footprint. Cut down on your consumption of goods that contain excessive single-use plastic packaging and parts.
RECYCLE what you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse. Be aware of the entire life cycle of items you bring into your life, from source to manufacturing to distribution to disposal.
